Organic Arrowroot

Arrowroot is extracted from the tubers of various rhizomes grown in tropical areas. History says that arrowroot has been used by the Mayans and early inhabitants of Central America to help pull out toxins in the blood caused by enemy inflicted poison-tipped arrows. Our arrowroot creates the desired consistency for Blisque Organic Toothpaste. It is believed that arrowroot calms inflammation and relieves pain in the mouth and gums.

Organic Aloe Vera Inner Fillet Leaf Juice

Aloe vera is a plant that grows in warmer climates and has been celebrated as an herbal medicine for thousands of years. Each leaf is composed of an outer rind, which serves as a protective outer barrier; a middle layer of bitter yellow sap, also known as aloe latex; and an inner layer of flesh considered the treasure of the plant. This inner flesh or fillet houses glucomannans, amino acids, lipids, sterols, and vitamins. Many anti-inflammatory agents are stored in the flesh. These include four plant steroids: cholesterol, campesterol, β-sisosterol and lupeol; two plant hormones: auxins and gibberellins; and salicylic acid. Lupeol and salicylic acid are also antibacterial agents.

Why Blisque Organic Toothpaste Uses The Inner Fillet of Aloe Vera And Not The Whole Leaf?: The inner filet is believed to be the most beneficial component of the aloe vera plant. The whole leaf of an aloe vera plant consists of the entire leaf including the yellow sap, also known as aloe latex. This latex contains harmful anthraquinone glycosides such as aloin. Aloin can cause irritation and if ingested can disrupt the electrolyte balance in the body. It was once sold as an over the counter laxative, but the FDA banned it due to its toxicity. Many institutions list aloe vera as a toxic plant due to these harmful anthraquinone glycosides present in the yellow sap. Some scientific studies also show that anthraquinone glycosides are carcinogenic. This is why Blisque Organic Toothpaste uses only the inner filet of the aloe vera plant.

Saponified Organic Plant Oils

Saponified organic plant oils are a safe and organic alternative to harsh chemicals such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). Saponified organic plant oils and SLS are both degreasers, however, the former is non-toxic whereas the latter is. The saponified organic oils in Blisque Organic Toothpaste will cleanse the oral cavity by washing out dirt and harmful bacteria.

Organic Cold Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil

Our organic cold pressed virgin coconut oil is unrefined and consists of at least 50% lauric acid. Lauric acid is a medium-chain fatty acid with strong antimicrobial properties. It is highly selective in regards to the bacteria it kills. This ensures that the beneficial flora in the oral cavity is not harmed.

Himalayan Pink Salt

Himalayan pink salt is the crème de la crème of salt. It is known for its high mineral content with a total of 84 minerals! Himalayan pink salt is believed to be the purest form of salt available - unpolluted with environmental toxins. Its origins go back 250 million years when the ancient seas evaporated leaving behind mineral rich salt deposits. These salt deposits were hidden under the Himalayan Mountains avoiding industrial pollution. Unlike sea salt, Himalayan pink salt is mined in the pristine Himalayan Mountains. Sea salt is harvested from sea water which is heavily contaminated with mercury, PCBs, dioxins, flame retardants and other hazardous wastes.

Himalayan pink salt alkalizes the mouth by increasing the pH within. This helps suppress the growth of acid-loving bacteria. Bacteria that thrive in acidic environments are the bacteria responsible for plaque buildup. Himalayan pink salt is also an antiseptic agent and is known to help heal bleeding gums.

Baking Soda

Sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking soda, is a mild abrasive used to gently polish teeth. It helps to remove stains from teeth and gives them a whiter appearance. Its plaque removal properties help combat tooth decay as well as bad breath. Baking soda can neutralize bacterial metabolic acids present in the oral cavity by increasing the pH. A higher pH in the mouth will prevent decay-causing bacteria from thriving.

Baking soda is sometimes touted as being detrimental to tooth enamel because it is too abrasive. However, this is far from the truth. Toothpaste is rated on its abrasiveness on a scale of 0-200. This is known as the Relative Dentin Abrasiveness or RDA value. A lower score indicates a lower abrasiveness for that particular agent. Pure baking soda scores an RDA of 7, which is the least abrasive agent when compared to other commercial toothpaste on the market.

It is important to note that baking soda can be manufactured synthetically or mined naturally. Most sources of baking soda today come from a chemical manufacturing process. Blisque Organic Toothpaste and Mouthwash both use baking soda that was naturally mined from mineral springs in Colorado.

Organic Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint is frequently used as a flavoring agent in many dental related products. The organic peppermint used in Blisque Organic Toothpaste goes beyond a flavoring agent. This is because Blisque Organic Toothpaste does not use cheap chemicals imitating the taste of peppermint nor does it use a peppermint extract. The peppermint used in Blisque Organic Toothpaste is a pure organic essential oil that comes with several added benefits for oral health. Peppermint essential oil kills anaerobic bacteria that live in the mouth. Anaerobic bacteria flourish in low oxygen environments and are known to cause gum disease. Other benefits of peppermint essential oil include fighting halitosis and relieving gum inflammation. The main compound in peppermint essential oil is menthol.

Organic Menthol

Menthol is an organic compound that is usually extracted from corn mint or peppermint. Menthol creates a cooling and refreshing sense inside the oral cavity. Today the majority of menthol used in dental products is synthetically made. The menthol used in Blisque Organic Toothpaste comes from 100% organically farmed corn mint and peppermint making it ideal for human use.

Organic Licorice Root Extract

Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a perennial herb used for many ailments especially those relating to oral health. Recent studies show that licorice root might be effective at fighting bacteria responsible for tooth decay and periodontal disease. Two of the antibacterial constituents in licorice root are licoricidin and licorisoflavan A.

Researchers found that both licoricidin and licorisoflavan A strongly inhibit Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia. Streptococcus mutans is considered the most important bacterium involved in tooth decay. Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia are bacteria that cause gum disease. Licoricidin also inhibited Fusobacterium nucleatum - another bacterium that causes gum disease. Battling these bacteria will help avoid tooth decay and gum disease.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh in 2015 found that trans-chalcone, a compound related to those in licorice root, prevents bacteria from forming biofilms. Trans-chalcone blocks Sortase A, a biofilm-forming enzyme, from functioning properly. The plaque that forms on your teeth and causes tooth decay and periodontal disease is a type of biofilm and therefore it is imperative to eliminate from your teeth.

Organic Olive Leaf Extract

Olive leaves come from the olive tree also known by the botanical name Olea europaea. Olive leaves contain many bioactive compounds, the most essential being oleuropein. Oleuropein has powerful antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal capabilities, and is effective against numerous detrimental infections including those related to the oral cavity.

The antibiotic power of olive leaf is highly specific. It targets pathogenic bacteria while keeping beneficial bacteria unharmed. Pathogens cannot mutate in defense against olive leaf as they do with commonly prescribed antibiotics. When this happens the antibiotic is ineffective because the pathogenic bacteria has become resistant to it. This makes olive leaf ideal for prolonged use.

Olive leaves are potent antioxidants as well. It has been documented that olive leaves are stronger antioxidants than green tea, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Antioxidants are crucial for the oral cavity because oral tissues are fragile and more susceptible to damage caused by free radicals and oxidative stress. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals ensuring that no harm is done to cells from oxidative damage.

Thyme thymol essential oil comes from the perennial herb known as Thymus vulgaris var thymol. This species of thyme, which is used in Blisque Organic Toothpaste, is composed mainly of thymol. Thymol is a powerful antioxidant and is also one of the strongest natural disinfecting agents known. Thyme thymol essential oil fights tooth decay, gingivitis, plaque, bad breath and oral infections by killing off the bacteria that cause these dental complications.

Organic Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil

Cinnamon bark essential oil comes from the bark of the Cinnamon zeylanicum plant and is renowned for its spicy flavor and scent. Many studies have shown that cinnamon bark essential oil (NOT cinnamon leaf oil) is superior at killing pathogens compared to other essential oils. Cinnamaldehyde is the chemical constituent that gives cinnamon bark essential oil strong antiseptic properties. Cinnamaldehyde wipes out the bacteria that cause periodontal disease as well as the bacteria responsible for cavities.

Research conducted in New Zealand showed that cinnamon bark essential oil was the most lethal against bacteria responsible for causing tooth decay and gum disease. The bacteria are known as streptococcus mutans and lactobacillus planetarium respectively.

Most personal care items today including toothpaste use cinnamon leaf oil because it is a much cheaper alternative to cinnamon bark.

Organic Clove Bud Essential Oil

Clove bud essential oil comes from the evergreen tree known as Syzygium aromaticum. Its use in dentistry is very common due to its analgesic and germicidal properties. The main component, known as eugenol, accounts for these actions. The anesthetic effect of clove oil also makes it great for numbing toothaches.

Clove bud essential oil has one of the highest oxygen radical absorbance capacities (ORAC) known. The ORAC level is a means to describe the strength of an antioxidant (higher score means stronger antioxidant). The ORAC level for clove essential oil according to “The Essential Oils Desk Reference” is nearly 10,800,000! In comparison with goji berries - a food containing one of the highest ORAC levels - they come in at an impressive 25,000. This is a significant ORAC level but dwarfed when compared to the 10,800,000 ORAC level of clove bud essential oil.

Antioxidants are important because they neutralize unstable free radicals. Free radicals have a set of unpaired electrons making them chemically reactive. To become stable these molecules want to steal an electron from another neighboring molecule to become stable. As a result, a chain reaction occurs causing oxidative damage to tissue. It is believed that an accumulation of oxidative damage is responsible for several diseases including those related to the oral cavity.

Organic Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon essential oil is extracted from the peels of lemons. The main component of lemon oil is limonene. Limonene gives lemon its citrus scent as well as its disinfecting capabilities. A study published in 2011 showed that isolated compounds from lemon essential oil all proved to be effective against pathogenic oral bacteria.

It is important to note that lemon oil and lemon juice have different chemical compositions. Lemon juice is highly acidic and when applied directly to teeth it can cause acid erosion to enamel. Lemon essential oil, on the other hand, is not acidic and will not implement harm to enamel.

Organic Eucalyptus Radiata Essential Oil

There are several hundred species of eucalyptus that exist and they comprise of various chemical compositions. Blisque Organic Toothpaste utilizes Eucalyptus Radiata because it is a species of eucalyptus that is high in a compound known as 1,8-cineole (also referred to as eucalyptol). 1,8-cineole provides several therapeutic properties including anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial actions. It has been documented that 1,8-cineole can eradicate oral bacteria that cause halitosis, hence it works as a breath freshener.

Avocado oil is pressed from the pulp of freshly grown avocados. In a study presented in the “Journal of Periodontology” in December 2001, avocado oil was shown to be effective at reducing inflammation of the gums. Organic Xylitol

Organic xylitol is an all natural sweetener that helps to enhance the flavor of Blisque Organic Toothpaste. Furthermore, xylitol provides additional oral health care benefits. It helps prevent oral pathogens from adhering to enamel and also obstructs their ability to release acids that are responsible for tooth decay.

Before including organic xylitol into Blisque Organic Toothpaste, we have done extensive research to make sure that it was non-toxic to the human body. We have found two main areas of concern:

1. The manufacturing process of xylitol usually uses nickel, which is a strong toxin. However, using certified USDA organic xylitol gets rid of this problem.

2. Xylitol can cause digestive issues. Since xylitol is not being consumed when used in toothpaste, this side effect can be counted out.

There should be no concerns about using 100% certified organic xylitol in Blisque Organic Toothpaste!
